Own Your Purpose
Your career should be your friend. Your career should support you, encourage you and provide you the opportunity to achieve your life ambitions. I often use the phrase “To a Career and Life Well Lived”. My book “Own Your Career-No One Else Will” was written to help all career developers with their careers. The book walked thru how to build an aspiration, understand where you are in your career lifecycle and provide some Tidbits to inspire and focus your efforts on key actions and next steps. One benefit to building a sustainable career, is that developing a career, aligned with your aspirations can be challenging, but also very rewarding. Accepting ownership of your career, is a good step in building a successful life, but not the only step. Certainly, having a great career can lead to a successful life, but only if you view work and life working together for you. Ideally, you can develop a partnership with your career that help you create a life you deserve and enjoy.
I avoid the word balance to describe the relationship between work and life. Balance to me means looking at the two ends of the scale and trying to take from one to give to the other, an equal distribution of effort and outcomes. It is not always like that! Careers and life have stages and the needs of your career and your life will change with time. Recognizing your needs, developing solutions and acting as a partner to realize your needs is important.
Will you always be satisfied with your life or your career? The answer is likely, no. Improving your effectiveness at work with your colleagues and customers, can help you create the time necessary to evaluate and engage in both career and life opportunities that provide you with greater enjoyment and satisfaction.
This book has been developed in support of those who want to build a successful career that will also support a successful life. You deserve the opportunity to achieve both you career and life aspirations.
